You are using a drug and you might not even know it.

It’s what powers most adults at the start of their day. Most often, we go for seconds after lunch. Sometimes, it’s just difficult to function without having a cup as soon as we get up in the morning.

Yep, it’s caffeine.

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant and the world’s most widely consumed psychoactive drug. How does caffeine stimulate your central nervous system...or you know, perk you up?

Well, caffeine blocks the binding of adenosine and its receptors. The adenosine is created by the brain. When it binds to its receptors, it causes your body to be drowsy. Caffeine fools your nerve cells by looking like adenosine. It binds to the receptors, confuses them, and reverses the supposed effect. So, instead of feeling drowsy, you’ll feel a surge of energy.

The most common source of caffeine is coffee beans. Therefore, the most common drug we take is a cup of coffee. But, caffeine is also present in other beverages like sodas, teas, and cocoa.

The US Food and Drug Administration classified Caffeine as generally recognized as safe (GRAS), which is why it’s not illegal to drink a cup of coffee. However, caffeine can produce a mild form of drug dependence. Withdrawal symptoms include sleepiness, headache, and irritability.
