Dopamine is an organic chemical that’s both a hormone and neurotransmitter. It affects a high number of functions in your body, such as the heart rate, blood vessel function, and kidney function. Aside from that, it directly affects one’s learning, motivation, movement, and sleep.

The two areas in the brain where Dopamine is created is called the substantia nigra and the ventral tegmental areas. Dopamine from the substantia nigra helps us begin movements and speech. While, Dopamine from ventral tegmental are created after we get a reward, which in turn helps us get moving.

What kind of reward do we need to trigger Dopamine? Well, anything that gives us pleasure. For example, eating your favorite pizza or hearing your favorite song can help release dopamine into your brain.

Aside from rewards, the release of Dopamine also helps in reinforcing habits or movements within ourselves. For example, when you reward yourself with a slice of pie after a workout, you are releasing Dopamine to your brain, which reinforces that working out is good. This reward-reinforcement effect also helps us with learning.

The rewards are not limited to food or physical assets. Dopamine can be released when you get recognition or the satisfaction of accomplishing a task.

Dopamine becomes a motivational chemical in our brains. It helps us focus and bring our attention to tasks or things that will give us rewards at the end.

Another interesting fact about Dopamine? A study showed that Dopamine is triggered when using recreational drugs such as heroin, nicotine, and cocaine. The reward effects of Dopamine causes addiction to these substances.
