Formula 1 cars are mechanical marvels. They are designed, created, and tweaked for one thing in mind‒speed. What’s the difference between F1 cars with the one in your garage? Both have an internal combustion engine, transmission, chassis, wheels, brakes, and steering wheel. But the similarities stop there. F1 cars are built to reach speeds as fast as 200 mph.
Let’s focus on one thing that allows Formula 1 cars to quickly shift from 0 to 60 in less than 2 seconds: the transmission.
The transmission’s purpose is to transfer all of the engine’s power to the rear wheels of the car. It includes parts such as the gearbox, differential, and driveshaft. The gearbox is connected to a differential, which is a set of gears allowing the car to speed up or slow down. The differential is then connected to the driveshaft, which transfers the power to the rear wheels.
Gear changes on a Formula 1 car are done by using paddle shifters instead of the traditional gate selectors found on road cars. With this, slowing down and speeding up of the car happens quickly, which is crucial in cornering and accelerating back on straights.
