Hard Disk Drives is the epitome of storage space for your computer files. Multiple storage format options came and went, but HDDs have been intact for more than 60 years. It can provide a bigger storage capacity at the cheapest price.

HDDs started out in 1953 when IBM recognized the need for high capacity storage at a low amount of cost. The engineers at IBM San Jose California laboratory invented the hard disk drive.

By 1957, hard disk drives had been used commercially. Initially, these HDDs were only available in data centers, a secure and protected environment. Advancement in technology allowed HDDs to become smaller while increasing storage capacity. However, not at the expense of higher costs. These made HDDs a staple in homes and businesses.

When HDD was initially available to personal computers, the maximum storage capacity that you can get was just at 5MB. By the 1990s, it’s typical for HDDs to have around 1GB of memory. Now, you can easily buy HDDs with 1TB to 6TB capacity, with 16TB being the largest option available.

Here’s a video on how hard drives work. Here’s another deep dive on the HD drives: a video on the Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording HD Drive which was developed for 18 years.
