Sometimes, we need a moment just to ourselves and we want to be far away from people as much as possible. We need MORE space. However, how much space does the universe really have? In 2013, the European Space Agency's Planck space mission concluded that the universe is 28 billion light-years in diameter. But wait, there's more. The universe is constantly expanding.
According to studies, the universe's revised expansion rate is about 10% faster than originally predicted. Lead author and 2011 Nobel Prize Winner for Physics Adam Riess says that the growing mismatch in the probability of the universe's new trajectory was not expected at all.
Reiss along with his colleagues used the Hubble Space Telescope to study 70 Cepheid variable stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). They also used observations made from a collaboration project involving researchers in the United States, Europe, and Chile. They used all of these pieces of information to calculate the Hubble constant, the universe's present-day expansion rate.
So, one thing's for sure, space is more than just 28 billion light-years away. Now, how much space do you need?
Go on, watch this vid about how big space is and get your mind blown!
