Toy cars have been entertaining us for a long time. One of the most popular types of toy cars is the pullback car. You pull it a few inches back, but the toy car travels more than 10 feet.

You’ve probably played with these toy cars when you were younger. But have you ever wondered how it works? Short answer: with gears and springs!

You can get pullback toy cars to move forward in two ways: push it forward or pull it back. What’s awesome is that you’ll notice that the car covers a longer distance when it’s pulled, rather than pushed.

This happens because there is a clockwork motor inside it. When the car is pulled back, an internal coil spring is wound up. When the car is released, the spring unwinds and propels the toy forward.

Because of gearing inside, the winding of spring is around fifteen times faster than when it unwinds. Using the gathered momentum by the coil being wound, it propels the toy car.
